This guide is intended to show you how to use a VPN server in Windows Server 2008 R2. This tutorial is for a small environment or environment that you simply host on a separate server.

    1. Install the Network Policy and Access Services role using Server the Manager
    2. Select Routing and Remote Access Services Role Services
    3. Configure and enable routing and remote access in Server the Manager.
    4. Select “Custom Configuration” if you now have a network interface on the server
    5. Select VPN Access
    6. Quit and continue
    7. Allow access to the user “Network Access Authorization”. You can set it on the Incoming Call tab in the User Preauthorization section.
    8. Open firewall ports for PPTP: 1723 TCP 47 GRE
For L2TP over IPSEC: 1701 TCP 500 UDP
      For SSTP: 443 TCP

Optional: If your local network does not have a DHCP server, you must add a static work address pool. This may be the case if someone has a standalone server from your ISP.

    1. Right click “Routing and Remote Access” and open “Properties”
    2. Click on specific IPv4 tab and enable static management pool
    3. Add a static private IP pool
    4. Add an additional IP address to access the server’s network interface, which is usually on the same subnet, essentially this pool.

Internet-based virtual private networks (VPNs), in lieu of the widely used leased lines, provide enterprises with around 1,000 businesses with a secure, low-cost type of electronic network. With a VPN, you can send data between multiple computers over a public or local community network in a manner that resembles the properties of a private point-to-point connection.

VPN can be used whenever the user is connected to the Internet, but this requires the internal network infrastructure to be configured to accept ping requests from the Internet.

    3. Select “Access Network Policies and Services.bam” and click “Next”.

We need to check the network status of the interface. For a quick command, type:

As you can see, we offer an alternative interface that is definitely disabled. In this exercise, we use only one I-NIC; asset for these ethernets for vpn connection also.

The LAN interface currently has the following IP solution settings:

How do I manually create a VPN?

Press the main Start button, then go to Settings > Network and Internet > VPN > Add VPN connection. For a great VPN provider, choose Windows (Built-in).Create your login name.Enter your server address.Select the type of trusted VPN connection.Set these credentials.Click “Save”.

In Server 2008 R2, the Routing and Remote Access Server sits below Network Policy and Access Services. So we have to add our role. Server Startup Manager and just click “Add Roles”.

Right-click on the server name and select Configure and enable routing and therefore remote access.

You will see that all server state changes become active (green icon with an arrow pointing up).

Once configured, the main Routing and Remote Access screen looks like this:

Select the desired user to be granted access to the VPN connection.

Right-click and selectSelect Properties. Click on the “Remote Access” tab. Select Allow connections. Click OK.

The VPN connection should not work at this time as the software does not have a dominant forwarding port 1723 (PPTP) to my RRAS server. I have Linux Shorewall firewall. I am watching a live debug document while connecting remotely to an RRAS host.

As you can see from the debug trace log, the Linux firewall is reporting that VPN site traffic is down for all reasons, possibly TCP / 1723 port is being handled incorrectly.

Now on the firewall, make sure incoming traffic for TCP / 1723 is being redirected to this VPN server:

How do I enable VPN on Windows Server?

Step 1: Update the system.Step 2: Install the remote access role.Step 3: Set up routing and remote access.Step 4: Set VPN properties.Step 5: Set up NAT.Step 6: Restart Routing and Remote Access.Step 7: Configure Windows Firewall.Step 8: Create a VPN user.

On an offline client computer on the Internet, follow these steps to establish the following connection.

Enter the public IP address of the remote site (the element where the RRAS VPN server was still located), enter a name for the connection, and click the New button.

Select the VPN connection you want to establish, in this case “My Second VPN Connection” we just created , and click Connect.

Click Network Option, select Many Versions of Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.

How do I setup a VPN on Windows?

Right-click the Start button.Click “Settings”. Source: Windows headquarters.Click Network and Internet.Click VPN. Source: Windows headquarters.Click Add VPN Connection.Click the dropdown menu under VPN Provider.Click Windows (embedded).Click in the Connection name field.

Make sure that the “Use a remote default gateway on the network” box is unchecked and click OK.

After the main connection is established, there are 4 interesting things to pay attention to. The RRAS server shows that the connection is busy:

And it also adds a route to the visitor on the local computer.

What would you add to a Windows Server 2008 server to use it as a VPN server?

Install the Network Policy and Access Services role by using Server Manager.Select the Routing and Remote Access Services role services.Configure and enable routing and remote access in Server Manager.

In this test center, we successfully created a PPTP VPN connection on Windows 2008 R2 with a single NIC. In addition, we have performed port forwarding on each Linux firewall to allow PPTP vehicles to be forwarded to the RRAS server. SOHO with routers like Linksys and DLINK it would be very easy to do this connector transfer so I didn’t try to cover it on this site. We also successfully connected to the VPN server and accessed it remotely.
