This guide is intended to show you how to use a VPN server in Windows Server 2008 R2. This tutorial is for a small environment or environment that you simply host on a separate server.
- Install the Network Policy and Access Services role using Server the Manager
- Select Routing and Remote Access Services Role Services
- Configure and enable routing and remote access in Server the Manager.
- Select “Custom Configuration” if you now have a network interface on the server
- Select VPN Access
- Quit and continue
- Allow access to the user “Network Access Authorization”. You can set it on the Incoming Call tab in the User Preauthorization section.
- Open firewall ports for PPTP: 1723 TCP 47 GRE
For L2TP over IPSEC: 1701 TCP 500 UDP
For SSTP: 443 TCP
Optional: If your local network does not have a DHCP server, you must add a static work address pool. This may be the case if someone has a standalone server from your ISP.
- Right click “Routing and Remote Access” and open “Properties”
- Click on specific IPv4 tab and enable static management pool
- Add a static private IP pool
- Add an additional IP address to access the server’s network interface, which is usually on the same subnet, essentially this pool.

Internet-based virtual private networks (VPNs), in lieu of the widely used leased lines, provide enterprises with around 1,000 businesses with a secure, low-cost type of electronic network. With a VPN, you can send data between multiple computers over a public or local community network in a manner that resembles the properties of a private point-to-point connection.
VPN can be used whenever the user is connected to the Internet, but this requires the internal network infrastructure to be configured to accept ping requests from the Internet.
3. Select “Access Network Policies and Services.bam” and click “Next”.
5. Also select access to the Routing and Remote Services role services, then click Next.
7. Click Start, Administrative Tools, then Routing and Remote Access.
8. On the configuration page, simply click the Enable and configure routing and remote access option.
11. On the Select Network page, select the network that users should connect to after connecting to them, and then click Next.
12. Select Automatic if there is already a good DHCP server on the network, or select a fixed address range, then click Next.
13. Click “Create”, enter the IP address and address range, and click “OK”.
15. Select No, use routing and remote access to authenticate connection requests. Then click Next.
18. Go to “Network and Sharing” and select “Set up romance or network”. Select the “Connect to a workstation” option.
20. Enter “Internet Home Page” and the recipient’s name, then click “Next”.

How do I manually create a VPN?
Press the main Start button, then go to Settings > Network and Internet > VPN > Add VPN connection.For a great VPN provider, choose Windows (Built-in).Create your login name.Enter your server address.Select the type of trusted VPN connection.Set these credentials.Click “Save”.
In Server 2008 R2, the Routing and Remote Access Server sits below Network Policy and Access Services. So we have to add our role. Server Startup Manager and just click “Add Roles”.
Right-click on the server name and select Configure and enable routing and therefore remote access.
You will see that all server state changes become active (green icon with an arrow pointing up).
Once configured, the main Routing and Remote Access screen looks like this:
Select the desired user to be granted access to the VPN connection.
Right-click and selectSelect Properties. Click on the “Remote Access” tab. Select Allow connections. Click OK.
The VPN connection should not work at this time as the software does not have a dominant forwarding port 1723 (PPTP) to my RRAS server. I have Linux Shorewall firewall. I am watching a live debug document while connecting remotely to an RRAS host.
As you can see from the debug trace log, the Linux firewall is reporting that VPN site traffic is down for all reasons, possibly TCP / 1723 port is being handled incorrectly.
Now on the firewall, make sure incoming traffic for TCP / 1723 is being redirected to this VPN server:

On an offline client computer on the Internet, follow these steps to establish the following connection.
Enter the public IP address of the remote site (the element where the RRAS VPN server was still located), enter a name for the connection, and click the New button.
Select the VPN connection you want to establish, in this case “My Second VPN Connection” we just created , and click Connect.
Click Network Option, select Many Versions of Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
